Make A List Of Your Sins

2 Timothy 3:16: All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

John 16:7: Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:

Painful as it might be, you will become more aware of and grateful for God*s forgiveness. You will have some specific reminders of the sinful nature of your flesh and your need to fight against it. You might even learn that the Apostle Paul was no more the chief of sinners than you are. It is more helpful to break your own heart over your sin than to try to break the hearts of others over theirs. There are more and more constant temptations in our time. I have committed sins that were unavailable to the Apostle and I am certain that you have. That circumstance makes us worse than the chief of sinners.

1 Timothy 1:15: This is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief.

I meet people everywhere who have an acquaintance with the facts of the Gospel, but who have not allowed the Gospel to probe deeply into their hearts. My wife*s mother, Grandmother Nilsen, lived in our home for some twenty years. We called her Bestemor, which is Norwegian for Grandmother. Our kids couldn*t pronounce the name so they shortened it to Bemore -- and that is what she was to us. She slipped away to Glory on the eve of her ninetieth birthday. During most of the months that preceded her homegoing, she was able to get about and always did the family washing on Monday morning.

During one of those busy days I happened to be at home and I said, *Bemore, tell me something. What does Jesus mean to you now, after so many years have passed?* She looked me full in the eye and said, *The older I get, the more I need a great Savior.* The Gospel was a probing tool to her decade after decade. Do you want the Gospel to accomplish something real in your life? Follow nineteenth-century evangelist Charles Grandison Finney*s advice and make a list of your failings. See what Jesus died for in your case. For your inherent sinfulness, of course, but what else? How long has it been since you wept over your own sins? You can*t lie to yourself and to God when you*re alone with Him. If, when you*re praying -- just you and your Lord -- your eyes are dry then, if your heart is cold then, if you manipulate and rationalize then, my dear friend, you need what the old-time holiness people used to call *a new touch.*

Small thought here. This has been my experience: every time I have sought my Lord with tears and waited on Him until my heart was touched -- cleansed and broken, melted and made tender -- at that very juncture I was enabled to believe God for the next step of obedience.
